FROM INVISIBLE TO VISIBLE
DID YOU KNOW THAT AT
THE end of the 19th century, the area around 2nd Street and Silver Avenue was the center of Chinese American business in Albuquerque? Or this interesting tidbit: Joe Kee, a Chinese immigrant, worked
for Albuquerque’s famous Lizzie McGrath(a.k.a. the Lily of Copper Avenue), who operated a brothel in the red light district near today’s downtown; Kee was McGrath’s cook and handyman. Today, Albuquerque’s Chinese American population is integral to the city’s community. The newest exhibition in the William A. + Loretta Barrett Keleher Gallery,
From Invisible to Visible:
The Chinese American Experience in Albuquerque, explores how our city’s Chinese American community formed and grew, as well as its venerable and important history in civil rights, commerce, and education.
